Old Track Plan

My old layout was basically a four track continuous loop with one long side going to be just the lines in a cutting with a hill/tunnel at one end and a bridge at the other. This was inspired by the Hadley Wood area. The other long side was a through station very loosely based on Doncaster. The ‘Works’ gave an excuse to run freshly painted locos (i.e. not weathered) and some locos from other regions. One of the short ends was going to be a loco shed/MPD in the vein of a scaled down Doncaster Carr and the other short end was going to be a fiddle yard (which failed miserably!).

Surprisingly, given my career and other interests, I have not got on with track planning software and have resorted to hand-drawn plans and trying out track arrangements in practice. As I have said elsewhere, I consistently made the curves too sharp in order to cram in as much as possible to the long narrow space. Here are some of the sketches I made –

This is the first sketch of the baseboards as I originally had them
From that I drew a scale plan
I then revised the sketch to show the water tank
And updated the plan
I then started adding the track (including extra baseboards to fill gaps)
This is the penultimate track plan
And this is the final track plan that I was working on before we decided to move
